Located in Madagascar's Central Highlands, in the Matsiatra region, Ambalavao is an attractive little town known as the center of the Antaimoro paper industry, a paper made from papyrus and wild flowers. It is famous for its traditional Betsileo houses, with their photogenic geometric balustrades. This town is a stopover for a visit to the Anja reserve, where three mountain-sized rocks form a magnificent backdrop to a lush forest populated by ring-tailed lemurs. If you're lucky enough to fall on a Wednesday, you can visit the zebu market (Madagascar's largest market for zebus, a breed of humped cattle).
