The Waterberg (meaning: water mountain) is a massive table mountain east of Otjiwarongo in central Namibia. This mountain is about 50 km long, up to 16 km wide and rises from the plains of the Omaheke, to a height of up to 200 metres. It is a natural barrier which often intercepts clouds, causing impressive rain and thunderstorms. The Waterberg is famous for the nature reserve established on the plateau, and is home to buffalo, white and black rhino, giraffe as well as eland.
Pre-historic dinosaur prints, petrified dunes and San rock engravings can be found in the Waterberg.
The local military cemetery is a reminder of a terrible tragedy in the history of the Herero people.
The Waterberg is made of compressed red sandstone.
