A safari isn’t only about elephants, lions and the usual favourites. The bush has far more stories to tell – and most of them lie right beneath your feet. In the Greater Kruger, you hop out of the 4x4 for a short guided walk and discover a completely new perspective.

With a local ranger at your side, you’ll learn how to read the tracks, footprints and subtle signs left behind by wildlife. A print here, a snapped branch there – suddenly everything fits together. Even if the animal has long moved on, the ground reveals its journey.

No need to worry: you won’t be taken close to dangerous animals. This is about observing, understanding and experiencing the bush from a different angle. And beware – those who pay close attention may just win the little tracking quiz at the end!

Greater Kruger is far more than the Big Five – it’s an open-air storybook. Every paw print, every snapped twig and every small pile of dung reveals who has passed by, when they were there and which direction they were heading.

Local rangers, especially Shangaan and Tsonga guides, have learnt to read these signs – a skill often passed down through generations.

Tracking is the art of noticing what others overlook. The fine scratches of a mongoose, the broad footprint of a hippo or the almost perfectly round droppings of a giraffe – each clue brings you a little closer to the wildlife around you.

These walks are short, safe and accessible to all. It’s not about endurance, but about observation – and, above all, experiencing safari differently: not through a camera lens, but with all your senses wide awake.
