Experience meerkats in the wild

With their bright eyes and inquisitive nature, meerkats are surely the most charismatic inhabitants of the Kalahari. In the Ntwetwe Pan, you have the rare chance to see them in the wild – no fences, no enclosures, simply out in the place they call home.

Accompanied by an experienced guide, you approach a colony slowly and respectfully. The animals are accustomed to humans, allowing you to watch them playing, standing guard and digging without disturbance. And if you’re lucky, one or two may even pop up on their hind legs to check who has come to visit.

The Ntwetwe Pan forms part of Botswana’s vast Makgadikgadi salt pans – an immense, almost endless horizon shaped only by sand and sky. This stark landscape is home to small colonies of meerkats, perfectly adapted to life in such harsh surroundings.

Thanks to years of gentle habituation, some groups can be observed from remarkably close range. This allows you to witness their complex social behaviour, their interactions and their quirky charm at an unhurried pace. These encounters are nothing like a zoo visit – they take place in the heart of the wilderness, where you are simply a respectful guest in the meerkats’ domain.
