A classic Botswana safari works beautifully in about seven to ten days, combining two or three different areas — most often the Okavango Delta, Chobe, and perhaps the Kalahari or Moremi — with a few nights in each. That's enough to experience Botswana's variety of water and land wilderness at the unhurried pace its premium camps are designed for. Add the nearby Victoria Falls, and you have a wonderful ten-to-fourteen-day trip.
Because Botswana's camps are remote, exclusive and reached by light aircraft, the rhythm is different from a road-based safari: you fly between a small number of camps and stay two or three nights at each, rather than covering ground. This makes for a relaxing, immersive trip — and means a week or so is plenty to feel you've truly experienced it.
Below we break down how long each area needs, what fits into a week or two, how the camps and flights shape the trip, and how to pace it over 50.
The quick answer

A Botswana safari is built from a small number of contrasting wilderness areas, linked by bush flights:
Most trips combine two or three of these, which is exactly why seven to ten days works so well.
About a week (7 days): a classic combination — typically the Okavango Delta and Chobe (or the Delta and Moremi), with three nights and two or three nights respectively. It's a rich, immersive safari that already feels complete, thanks to the variety between water and land.
Ten days: the same core plus a third area — adding the Kalahari, more of the Delta, or a couple of nights at Victoria Falls — at a thoroughly relaxed pace.
Twelve to fourteen days: a fuller Botswana safari combined with Victoria Falls and/or a neighbour — pairing the Delta and Chobe with the Falls, and perhaps extending into Namibia or South Africa for contrast. This makes a grand Southern Africa journey.
Because Botswana's camps are premium and the style is immersive rather than fast-moving, you get a great deal from a week or so — there's no need to rush, and quality tends to matter more than quantity here.
Botswana's safari style is distinctive, and it suits over-60s well:
This fly-in, few-camps, all-inclusive style is a large part of why Botswana feels so effortless and comfortable, despite being deep wilderness.

Pace for comfort. Botswana is naturally gentle — no long drives, plenty of rest, and comfortable camps — so the main advice is simply not to cram in too many camps. Two or three areas over seven to ten days, with three nights in the Delta, gives a wonderfully unhurried, immersive trip. Resist the urge to add a fourth camp just to tick a box.
Combining. Botswana pairs superbly with Victoria Falls (a short flight away) and with Namibia or South Africa for a longer Southern Africa journey — ideal if you'd like beaches, cities or deserts alongside the wildlife.
How our experience helps
We know Botswana's camps intimately — their character, comfort, water-versus-land balance and pace — and we build trips that flow gently between two or three of them, with the bush flights and luggage arranged and the whole thing all-inclusive. We keep the number of camps sensible so you settle and relax rather than rush, and we can weave in Victoria Falls or a neighbouring country. For a great many of our over-60s travellers, a week or ten days in Botswana was the most effortless and spectacular safari they'd taken.
Frequently asked questions
Is a week enough for Botswana? Yes — a week combining, say, the Okavango Delta and Chobe already makes a rich, immersive safari. Botswana's premium, unhurried style means you get a great deal from seven to ten days.
How many nights should I spend in the Okavango Delta? Around three nights lets you enjoy the mix of mokoro, boat and vehicle safaris and settle into the rhythm of the Delta — the heart of most Botswana trips.
How do you travel around Botswana? By light aircraft between remote camps, on short scenic flights, rather than long drives — a relaxing, efficient style, though with tight luggage limits (a soft bag of around 15–20 kg).
Can I combine Botswana with Victoria Falls? Yes — Victoria Falls is a short flight away and a natural add-on, making a wonderful ten-to-fourteen-day trip alongside the Delta and Chobe.
Is two weeks too long in Botswana? Not if you combine it — two weeks lets you pair a Botswana safari with Victoria Falls and perhaps Namibia or South Africa for a grand Southern Africa journey. For Botswana alone, seven to ten days is often ideal.
Why are Botswana safaris often shorter than other trips? Because the camps are premium, all-inclusive and immersive, you experience a great deal in a week or so — quality and exclusivity tend to matter more than covering lots of ground.
